The Karatta Fedora is a handcrafted wool felt hat that blends traditional hat-making with the grounded character of Kangaroo Island’s working landscape. Named after Karatta, a pastoral region in the island’s southwest, this design also honours the S.S. Karatta — a steamship that, over a century ago, connected Kangaroo Island to the mainland. Carrying people, wool, and essential goods between Kingscote and Port Adelaide, it served as a vital trade link for the early communities and helped shape the island’s economic and cultural identity.

Crafted by our resident hatter, the Karatta Fedora is made to order and individually shaped for each customer. From the knitting and felting of the wool to the final hand-blocking process, each step reflects slow fashion, patience, and precision. The wool’s soft yet structured feel is made possible by the use of Superfine Merino Wool, offering a perfect balance of natural breathability and lasting comfort. A genuine Kangaroo leather hat band completes the design, bringing texture and elegance to a truly island-made piece.

Designed with a sleeker crown and a narrower brim than the Flinders Fedora, the Karatta offers a more refined, streamlined silhouette while maintaining the same depth of craftsmanship and character.

Rooted in the legacy of farming families whose connection to the land spans generations, and inspired by the long history of trade and craftsmanship on Kangaroo Island, the Karatta Fedora carries with it a quiet sense of heritage — one shaped by work, weather, and the stories passed along the way.
